We are lucky to live in California! Year round, we have an incredible bounty of fresh, nutritious raw ingredients to eat right off the vine or to craft into sumptuous dishes to serve at the table. This blog is an outlet for us to share with you readers the enchanting experience we have day to day in our kitchen and garden. As tradition holds, the Davis's held their annual Christmas party today at their home in Gilroy. Well attended by family and friends, the gathering included a delightful array of appetizers, main dishes and desserts. This year, slow cooked pulled pork and chicken were the highlights. A pot of chili, bowls of fruits and greens, coleslaw, potato salad, pickles and sauces rounded out the meal. Yum! Thanks, Barbara and Greg.

It's hard to beat fresh cracked Dungeness crab. Last night's dinner came from the docks in San Francisco and was cleaned by the fine folks at Whole Foods. Served with drawn butter, sourdough bread, Southern Red Slaw (Stamey's recipe), corn on the cob, steamed spinach, mashed red potatoes with garlic butter. And did I mention, a splash of Robert Young?

Crab Louis Salad

A perfect cross-over moment between fall and winter ---- the last of the ripe red tomatoes from the garden and the first dungeness crab of the season from San Francisco. The occasion called for a crab louis salad.

- fresh picked dungeness crab, with help from Kellan who cleaned his first whole crab
- romaine lettuce hearts
- boiled egg
- garden tomatoes
- peperoncini peppers
- brined pickle
- capers
- louis dressing (from scratch: mayo, chili sauce, olive, lemon, scallion, Worcestershire, horseradish)
- backyard Lisbon lemon
- sweet paprika
- fresh ground Tellicherry pepper

Oh yes, and a glass of Robert Young chardonnay!
